THE STORY

The Story

Millennia after Calamity Ganon's defeat, the endless reincarnation of the bearers of the Triforce is no more. Even their names and legends have faded into nothing, and without them, the Blight spreads.

It writhes across Hyrule, stalking through forest and plain, slinking through sleeping ruins, and hunting the fading glimmers of hope as all life struggles to survive in its shadow.

This is your life. You exist. You are not the Chosen One. You are only one person, and while you may use this world's slumbering powers to make a difference, this will not fix everything.

Still.

Take Courage. Be Wise. Nurture Power.

Adventurers in the wilds of Hyrule

The World

A millennia has passed since the events of Breath of the Wild, and the world has long been a dark place. The Triforce and its heroes who shaped so much of Hyrule's history disappeared so long ago they are not even remembered by Hyrule's people. The dragons Farosh, Dinraal, and Naydra are also gone. The old Deku Tree died. Sheikah technology, Guardians, and related Shrines are completely unheard of.

Malice fermented into Blight, a toxic substance which coats the land and corrupts all that it touches. It has also choked travel and made it too dangerous to live outside of a few key locations. Thus, there is no current accurate map of Hyrule, and no one has survived crossing outside of this thread of the known world.

Finally, a Blood Moon rises every 26 days, resurrecting all monsters that have been slain so that they may continue to attack humans, Rito, Goron, and Zora alike.

The world of Hyrule under darkness

The Blight

Blight is a condition caused by exposure to Malice. It poisons the land and water, infecting all living beings. Only mild symptoms are felt at first but a short time after a host is infected, the Blight grants them benefits to strength, speed, and dexterity. These benefits increase as the infection spreads, even as rashes appear on the host's body. What lies beyond these initial stages is mostly unknown. Some say that the infected fall into violent rages, others that the Blight sprouts from their bodies to infect passersby, and others claim that it devours a person's heart, mind, and soul completely, leaving the infected a shambling host. All that is known is no settlement has survived keeping a Blighted amongst their number.

Despite this, there are groups who worship the Blight. They claim that its ability to enhance its hosts make it a blessing, not a curse, and the stories of berserker rages, Blight-zombies, and more to all be fabricated rumors preventing everyone from reaching a higher state of being. Villagers found to be holding these dangerous and heretical beliefs are typically exiled lest they act on these ill-conceived ideas and endanger those around them.

Worse, recently, the Blight has been expanding, and monsters are becoming more numerous. Places that were once safe to pass may now be wreathed in Blight or infested with monsters.

Blight spreading through Hyrule

The Villages

All of this has made living in Hyrule a difficult process. There are only three known safe places to live; Rudania, Inariko, and Vhintl, and even in these villages times are rough. Each village only has the resources to support a couple hundred people, and they rely on their able bodied members dedicating the majority of their day to day tasks toward ensuring that each village may survive as a whole. Villages don't even use rupees, since everything runs on a barter economy. There are, however, small glimpses of hope. Dinraal, Naydra, and Farosh may be gone, but Darune, Sanskar, and Foras have taken their places as the Dragons of Power, Wisdom, and Courage. A new Deku Tree is rumored to be located somewhere within Vhintl. There are also the Oracles, the Golden Goddesses made mortal, who help protect their respective villages and those who live within them.

Perhaps with everyone working together the tides may be turned, and the Blight pushed back — or perhaps even defeated so that the world may learn what peace feels like after so many centuries spent living in a nightmare.
